September feels to me like the morning caffeine just kicked in - there is a buzz of energy to move around and do a lot of things. When in balance, this energy may feel motivating; when out of balance you may feel tension and overwhelm. We are powerful in that we can pause and observe how we attune to the incoming autumn energy and manage our reception and digestion of the energy into balance.

In my personal practice, I find that incorporating practices that are grounding and flowing help to direct the energy in the fall months more towards the balanced end of the spectrum.

Here are some ideas for these practices:

Grounding

  • Spend time in nature

  • Yoga poses such as star pose (see picture below)

  • Daily morning meditation of any length to set your day

Moving

  • Any type of physical movement (walking, running, dancing, vinyasa yoga)

  • Focus on breath movement by taking complete inhales and exhales

  • Acknowledge the energy around you and allow it to flow through you

Regular moving and grounding practices will help reset and maintain your mindset through the fall months. Commit to your wellbeing like you make commitments to other people and activities: schedule it in your calendar and stick to it the best you can!

If you are interested in fall yoga practices, I am offering Fall Vinyasa, Late Summer Yin & Meridians, and Fall Yin & Meridians on my Videos page, you can get these as individually purchased videos or through a subscription.

We are moving with nature into a quiet and reflective season, a time to connect with spirit. Spirit can have any meaning that resonates with you, and your connection will also shift over time. As we venture into a season that promotes reflection, soul growth, and spirit connection we reach to the sky, like a tall tree. For the tree to grow so high, it must have the strong roots, deep into the earth. We have opportunities every day to connect with earth energy and groundedness -- it can come from being aware when you are doing everyday tasks like eating a meal, putting away dishes, housecleaning, or doing the laundry. These ordinary moments are the perfect time to practice awareness in your body, your movements, and thoughts.

Tools like meditation and yoga are versatile in that they can be applied in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments. Happy Thanksgiving, keep on practicing, and be well!

This quick meditation can be done anywhere, in almost any situation when you can briefly be still. Use the meditation whenever you need to get out of your head and back into a solid place from which wise action emanates.

  1. Sit or stand with feet firmly on the floor and length in your spine.

  2. Pay attention to the physical connection from the soles of your feet through your shoes, down to the surface of the floor, through the building and all the way down towards the ground.

  3. Picture the earth – the dirt, the rocks – supporting you.

  4. Take a deep breath, so deep that the earth under you responds to your inhale, and with your exhale, she sends you her warmth, her comfort, and her steadiness.

  5. You can follow several more breaths with this exchange or continue on with your day after simply one breath.
